Over the years, the Kansas State Fair has offered novelty attractions such as deep-fried Twinkies and wrestling alligators.
This year, a band of baboons will come to town.
"Wild About Monkeys," a 30-minute show featuring six live baboons mixed with slapstick comedy, can be seen at the Kansas State Fair three times a day, every day.
Kevin Keith, host of the show and trainer of the monkeys, has been working with the animals for more than 25 years. His monkeys have appeared in the films "Evan Almighty" and "The Rundown," twice on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno, and in several commercials, including a 2003 Super Bowl ad. The baboons also had a brief cameo in this year's film "Dinner for Schmucks."
The "Wild About Monkeys" show has been performed by Keith and his wife, Martina, at state fairs nationwide, from Florida to California.
"It's really a show where there's something for all ages," Keith said. "We have programs for 2-year-olds at preschools and ones for (senior citizens). Everybody loves monkeys."
He's confident audiences will find his primates to be natural comedians. Think "The Three Stooges," except with monkeys.
Between showtimes, the animals will play around on the set, allowing fairgoers a chance to watch them in a casual setting.
The six baboons range in ages from 1, Mojo, to 22, Azumah, who is a large Mandrill baboon with a colorful face, a real-life Rafiki from Disney's "The Lion King."
"All of them have different personalities," Keith said.
Since Azumah is older and diabetic, he doesn't do as many mobile tricks, Keith said, but he still shows audiences his large teeth, as well as his smile. The other monkeys have a variety of tricks, with a wide range of difficulty.
Dagney, a 17-year-old baboon, performs a trick in which she pulls her cheeks together and sticks out her tongue. It lasts about three seconds, but it took Keith six months to train her to do it.
He believes that Dagney is the only baboon doing that trick around the nation.
The shows are scheduled daily at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
