A fire tonight caused about $40,000 in damage to a house at 1745 S. Topeka, according to a Wichita fire official.
The home's only two occupants, a man and a woman, sustained smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene, Battalion Chief Andy Cole said. Both refused to be taken to the hospital.
Shortly after 8:30 p.m., a passerby on Broadway — one street to the west of Topeka — saw flames coming out of the back of the house and reported it.
The Wichita Fire Department had the fire out by 9 p.m. but remained on the scene.
A kitchen and bedroom are in the rear of the house, Cole said. Investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
Cole put the damage put at $30,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the contents.
