Yulia Sharshel is juggling as fast as she can.
By the end of the week, Stay-Fit Fitness Equipment, the company she owns with her husband, Dan, should be in its new home.
She works full time as a nurse at a Wichita hospital. She and Dan, a retired nurse, have seven children between them. Three, including a 4-year-old and a 5-year-old, live with them.
And she uses the fitness equipment she sells, so she can provide personal insight to customers.
"It never stops," she said of her work week
The move, from 9328 W. Central to 9320 W. Central, puts the business closer to Central and provides an additional 800 square feet of space, she said.
How's business?
"It's been all right. With the economy the way it is, with all the downturns, we were expecting the business to drop off, to slow down. Especially for us, summertime is usually the slowest time of the year.... But surprisingly, this year our sales actually have not dropped off at all."
How did you get into the fitness business?
"Osmosis. (Dan) has always been working with exercise equipment, even while he was a nurse. He was always fixing it or working on it for somebody part time, selling it. Then he just asked me one day whether I would be OK if he stopped nursing and did the exercise equipment sales and opened up his own business.... We just did it together from the very beginning."
You sell both used and new equipment?
"We sell refurbished. We refurbish the used equipment, and then new. Overall... everybody's trying to get the best deal they can for the least amount possible, from the equipment they're buying. People have started to be really conscious of exactly what they need rather than an upgrade or add-ons. They just go with what they need rather than what they wanted."
Do you sell much commercial equipment?
"It's actually quite a small percentage... to hotels, fire departments, smaller, more rural fitness centers or community wellness centers. We sell most of our commercial equipment outside the Wichita and Sedgwick County area."
What keeps you up at night?
"Just trying to get everything arranged, everything switched over, and be open so we don't lose any business while we are moving. And then my husband gets me up at night all of a sudden asking some random question about business. So we have a rule (now) —after 8 p.m., there is no business talk. And it is strictly enforced."
