WICHITA — A man upset about his health and talking about wanting it to "be over with" prompted authorities to close surrounding streets and place a nearby school on lockdown for a short time this afternoon in west Wichita.
The man, who is in his 50s, did not directly threaten anyone, Wichita police Lt. Guy Schroeder said, but authorities became concerned when he indicated he had several weapons in his house in the 400 block of North Pamela, near Maple and Tyler.
Authorities were notified just after 2 p.m. when the man called the center where he had been receiving treatment.
Because weapons were an issue, Schroeder said, the nearby streets of Wood, Pamela and Peterson were closed as a precaution. Wilbur Middle School was placed on lockdown shortly before classes ended for the day.
"We didn't want anybody walking in the neighborhood" while the incident was unfolding, Schroeder said.
The man came out onto his front porch to smoke a cigarette, Schroeder said, and police were able to persuade him to surrender shortly after 3 p.m. He was taken to Via Christi Hospital on Harry for evaluation.
Police found numerous weapons in the house, Schroeder said, but at no time did the man threaten to harm police or himself.
