Tim Bonnell bought his first Chrysler in December 1970, a Plymouth Barracuda.

"I dated in that car. I got married in that car. I'm going to be buried in that car," Bonnell said, laughing.

On Monday, Bonnell was among more than a dozen members of the Wichita Area Mopar club displaying their cars, from vintage to modern, at Davis-Moore Chrysler Dodge Jeep at 6215 E. Kellogg.

The Davis-Moore dealership was participating in the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon Monday. It is also the sponsor of the club, whose 120 members own a number of makes of car brands built under Chrysler: AMC, Jeep, DeSoto, Dodge and Plymouth.

Mopar is an abbreviation for "motor parts" and is the brand used by Chrysler Group to encompass its parts and service.

Bonnell showed up on a windy, 90-plus-degree day to display his 2002 Dodge Viper GTS coupe.

In addition to the Viper and the 1970 Barracuda, Bonnell owns three other Mopar cars.

"We're here today to support our sponsor, Davis-Moore, and of course, MDA," said Bonnell, who is a club board member.

Rick Aldrup, the Wichita Area Mopar club's president, said the reason for attending this and other shows "is mostly about the cars, the people."

"When they (Davis-Moore) gave us the invite, we wanted to come," said Aldrup, the owner of a 1973 Dodge Charger.

On display Monday were the typical late-1960s and early-1970s Mopar muscle cars such as the Charger and a Plymouth Superbird, distinctive because of its tall trunk wing and a sweeping and elongated nose.

But there were some obscure Mopars such as a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere and a 1958 DeSoto.

And then there were the newer Mopar muscle cars, such as a 2009 Daytona Charger.

Bonnell said he hopes people younger than his generation will have reason to carry on the interest in Mopars because the of newer muscle cars Chrysler is producing, such as the Daytona Charger and the Challenger.

"There's still a market for new American muscle," he said.
