Careless smoking was the cause of a duplex fire Monday at 6110 E. Ironhorse Circle that did more than $100,000 in damage, fire officials said.
The fire broke out about 3:30 p.m. and gave firefighters trouble because of high winds, said Wichita fire Capt. Ken Rodgers.
Rodgers said there were no injuries in the blaze.
"It was venting out the front," Rodgers said. "We're just lucky the fire didn't jump from house to house."

Sheriff to train reserve deputies
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office will hold a reserve deputy academy this fall.
The academy is 20 weeks and requires class attendance Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m., with occasional all-day Saturday classes. A start date hasn't been announced.
The department needs qualified men and women to work as volunteers in law enforcement, working closely with full-time sheriff's deputies.

Wichita to auction off vehicles, more online
The city of Wichita will hold an Internet-only auction of surplus vehicles and equipment, closing at 10 a.m. on Sept. 15.
Sale items include cars, trucks, spreaders and other equipment. Inspections are available from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the lot north of 1801 S. McLean.

Project to close I-135 ramp near Newton
A Kansas Department of Transportation project to widen ramps at the interchange at I-135 and Southeast 36th south of Newton will close the southbound ramp onto the interstate on Sept. 30.
The remaining three ramps at the interchange will be closed in the future as construction progresses. The project is scheduled to be completed by late November.

Firm to study metro area's traffic flows
The Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization has commissioned a regional travel time study over the next two months.
Iteris Inc. will measure the travel time, delay and level of service on roads in Sedgwick County and parts of Butler and Sumner counties.
Information from the study will help elected officials and the Transportation Policy Body determine which transportation improvements are needed for the region.
