Three years ago, Hutchinson Trinity's senior quarterback quit the team heading into the season to concentrate on basketball. First-year coach Sean Racette was forced to start a sophomore at quarterback.
Derek Racette, Sean's son, has played a role in leading Hutch Trinity to a 20-4 record since 2007, including Friday's 62-13 win over Cheney, a class 4A team. Hutch Trinity returned 12 seniors and 15 returning starters from a squad that went 11-1 in 2009, with Derek leading the way.
"What helped us against Cheney was our experience coming back," Sean said." In the first game it comes down to jitters and who doesn't make mistakes will have the better chance to win. I thought that was what gave us a lift against them."
Derek orchestrated the Hutch Trinity passing attack last season, throwing for over 2,500 yards. He also led the way rushing with 618 yards on the ground.
"I remember my sophomore year there was a lot of growing pains," Derek said." I threw almost as many interceptions as I did touchdowns. I made a lot of mistakes, and I've learned from them in between my sophomore year and junior year to now."
Hutch Trinity faces Ell-Saline, another 1-0 team, on Friday.
"Our kids worked hard in the offseason to get prepared for this season," Sean said. "And of course their expectations are high. I know it's a cliche, but we're really just focused on playing one game at a time and improving each day. We're focused on the team that's next on the schedule. This week that's Ell Saline."
