Three question for WSU baseball

  • Published Tuesday, Sep. 7, 2010, at 12:02 a.m.

Q: What role will lefty Brian Flynn play?

A: Flynn, back after missing last season due to academics, could grab a place in the weekend rotation. If another starter emerges, pitching coach Brent Kemnitz will give Flynn a look as the long-relief hammer, similar to the role Darren Dreifort made famous in the early 1990s.

Q: Who steps up in the bullpen?

A: Junior Grant Muncrief, now 16 months after elbow surgery, gets another shot to be a key figure after struggling last season. He did not put up great numbers in the Northwoods League and shut down his summer in late July. He believes he is getting closer to full effectiveness.

"I got in a lot of good work," he said. "I was able to pull some positives from it."

Muncrief won't throw early in fall practice, but expects to be on the mound during the intrasquad series.

Q: Who starts in the outfield?

A: We probably won't know until the spring. Pencil junior Kevin Hall in center for his excellent defense. He can make it a sure thing if he can get on base and use his speed during the fall. Sophomore Garrett Bayliff started four games last season. Redshirt freshman Micah Green and junior transfer Don Lambert give the Shockers speed. Lambert started 25 games in two seasons at Baylor. First baseman Johnny Coy has some outfield experience and could get a look in left if Preston Springer can handle first base.
