For fall 2010, baubles and bangles and beads are anything but bashful. "Jewelry is continuing to be nice and bold and you can find glitter in almost everything," said Holli Davis, jewelry buyer for Lyndon's in Bradley Fair shopping center. "Sometimes the sparkle comes from the way the metal is cut and sometimes it's from stones."
Davis says designer Alexis Bittar captures the look with his bold Lucite jewelry that offers a vintage look on a modern background.
Bittar's creations show up on New York runways for such designers as Michael Kors, Dennis Basso and Michael Angel. He was recently named accessory designer of the year for the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and is a favorite of Lyndon's customers.
Mary Bengtson and Ursula Swanson of Nouveau, also in Bradley Fair, agree it's a fun season for jewelry.
"As for earrings, hoops complement all of your jewelry and continue to be important," Bengston said. "This fall, look for shapes that include oval and oblong and finishes such as brassy golds and oxidized silvers."
Delicate and feminine jewelry always looks great, but the new necklaces are chunky, long and edgy, Swanson said.
"Mixing multi-strand chains with crystals and pearls provides a fresh enhancement for the many layered looks of fall," she said.
Multi-strand is a key word for fall. If you choose to wear smaller, delicate jewelry, don't stop with one piece. Think of it as layering, says Meghan Forstythe, assistant manager of Dustee's Fashion Accessories in NewMarket Square.
"I tend to layer necklaces myself so when I help people I start with a short necklace and show them how easy it is to layer others with it," she said. Choose reasonably priced pieces, "and layer them without spending a lot of money."
Betsy Morrison of Frou Frou, 8390 E. 21st St., said scarves also will be an important accessory for fall.
"We just went to market in Las Vegas and I can't tell you how many I ordered, but I know it's going to be a popular item," she said. "It's such an easy way to add color and texture to any outfit."
