St. Patrick Catholic Church in Wichita celebrated its 100th anniversary this morning with worship services, a picnic and the inaugural ringing of a new bell in the church tower.

"Whenever we hear the ringing of this bell, we will remember that we are one family coming together to show our unity in Christ," said Bishop Michael Jackels during the blessing of the bell.

"May its voice direct our hearts" toward God, he said, "and prompt us to come gladly to this church."

St. Patrick Catholic Church and School was established 100 years ago in a building on North Wellington Place, near 18th and Broadway. It moved in 1945 to its current location near 21st and Arkansas.

Until now, there hasn't been a bell in the church tower. The parish recently purchased one "as one way to celebrate our history and make a statement that we intend to endure," said Father Jerome Spexarth, pastor of the church.
