Longtime Wichita dance instructor dies at home

The Wichita Eagle

Julie Keeling taught dance and touched lives.

That's how most people will remember the dance instructor who died unexpectedly Thursday at her home in Wichita. She was 52.

Ms. Keeling, who graduated from Kansas State University in 1980 with a degree in physical education, taught ballet, tap and jazz for 30 years at a studio in her home on North Cypress. Her students ranged from age 3 to 18.

Ms. Keeling's husband, Doug, a local attorney, said her students and former students likely number "in the thousands."

"Any given year, especially during the height of things, she'd have 250 students a year," Doug Keeling said. "She touched a lot of lives."

The Keelings have two grown children, Kyle Ann and Michael.

Doug Keeling said he is unsure what will happen to the dance school. Students were scheduled to start a new year of classes next week.

A memorial reception will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at Crestview Country Club, 1000 N. 127th St. East. The public is invited to attend.
