Two men from Mexico have been charged in Kansas federal court with illegally possessing firearms.
U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom today said that Ernesto Hernandez-Lizardi, 30, and Raul Manzanarez-Rivera, 29, could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
A complaint filed in U.S. District Court says a Kansas Highway Patrol officer pulled the two men over for speeding just after midnight Aug. 16 on I-70 in Ellis County.
An affidavit filed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Special Agent Victor Montemayor III says the men gave permission for troopers to search their vehicle.
Inside the 2003 Chevrolet pickup, Montemayor said officers found $14,400 in cash in a console between the seats.
Troopers took the vehicle to KHP headquarters, Montemayor said. A subsequent search turned up a loaded Ruger .45 caliber pistol, a loaded .380 caliber pistol and a 7.62x39 caliber SKS assault rifle.
The agent said both men admitted being in the country illegally.
