Wichita State's basketball recruiting efforts for big men will get most of the attention this fall, because the Shockers lose three seniors of size.
Don't forget point guard, where WSU is on the list for senior Austin Chatman of The Colony High, a school near Dallas. Chatman will visit WSU the weekend of Sept. 10.
He isn't looking for any big revelations. He came to games against Texas Tech and Missouri State last season.
"I pretty much know everything I need to know about Wichita," he said. "I've got a good relationship with the coaches. They've been recruiting me the longest."
The 6-foot Chatman helped The Colony to the Class 4A semifinals last season and was named co-Offensive Player of the Year in his district.
"He's very, very quick," coach Cleve Ryan said. "He's also under control. He can score from the outside. The mid-range jumper is probably the more consistent part of his game."
Ryan is just as impressed with Chatman away from basketball. The leadership part of being a point guard is part of his personality.
"He's very well respected here in school," Ryan said. "The younger players look up to him, and so do the kids in middle school and elementary school."
Chatman said he is also considering Creighton and Colorado, where former WSU assistant Tad Boyle is coach. He wants to sign in November so he can concentrate on winning a state title.
"Then, during basketball season, it wouldn't be the main thing on my mind," he said. "I want to stay focused."
TexasHoops.com ranks Chatman the No. 26 prospect in the state, describing him as "very fast with the ball, gets into the paint with ease, can finish at the rim, shoots it well from three-point range, tough defender."
New homes — Former Shocker basketball player Kenny Manigault didn't stay long at The Citadel due to academic problems.
He is in school at NCAA Division II South Carolina-Aiken and will have three seasons of eligibility. He can play this season.
Manigault left WSU for The Citadel in July. In his one season at WSU, Manigault, a 6-foot-4 guard, played in 16 games.
* Former Creighton guard P'Allen Stinnett landed at Division II Missouri Western in St. Joseph and is eligible this season.
"If P'Allen buys into Missouri Western and wants to do what he can to make us better, this thing can work," coach Tom Smith told the Omaha World-Herald. "If he comes in thinking he's too good for us and that he doesn't have to try hard and do the things you need to at any level, then it's probably not.''
New Creighton coach Greg McDermott kicked Stinnett off the team in April. Former coach Dana Altman suspended him during the season.
* Northern Iowa forward Lucas O'Rear spent the summer pitching for the Reds' rookie league team in Arizona. Basketball will be his main gig now that school is in session.
O'Rear is in Cedar Falls and ready for practice.
"We're all just excited to get after it," he told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.
O'Rear went 1-1 with a 4.38 ERA in eight games.
Gym dandy — WSU volleyball recruit Lauren Longbine, from Emporia High, is one of five Kansans on the American Volleyball Coaches Association watch list for high school All-Americans.
Longbine, a 6-foot-1 senior, plays middle blocker and outside hitter. She said WSU coach Chris Lamb may also take a look at her as a setter.
Longbine committed to WSU in April after also considering Emporia State, Kansas, North Texas, Creighton and others. She likes Lamb's preference of a deep roster — last season he redshirted nine players — and sees that as a positive.
"It's such a good environment and there's such competition," she said. "I love the way they train their players. They can take someone who's not a five-star recruit and turn them into something."
Longbine said she plans to sign when the signing period begins Nov. 10.
Worth noting — WSU's media relations department posted video from 1955 men's basketball games against Tulsa and Seattle at goshockers.com. The film was provided by Cleo Littleton, who played in both games.... Former WSU cross country coach Wayne Angel is the new men's track and field coach at Florida A&M. Angel, at WSU from 1999-2002, was track and field coach at Illinois.... Kent State hired former WSU pole vaulter Brooke Demo as assistant coach and director of operations for track and field. Demo, from El Dorado, qualified for the NCAA outdoor championships twice and the indoor championships twice at WSU.
