No events are scheduled next month for Intrust Bank Arena, and Sedgwick County is expecting operating losses in July and September.

Commissioners were not surprised, however, when assistant county manager Ron Holt delivered that warning Wednesday.

Summer months typically are down times for arenas. Holt expects August to come out OK, but he said July and September likely will be in the red.

The county is protected by a contract that makes SMG, the private company that manages the downtown arena, responsible for any losses.

Through June, the arena has had gross ticket sales of $12.3 million for 71 performances. Average attendance per performance was 4,668.

The average cost of tickets from opening through June was $40.33.

The arena had four acts in June — the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Tim McGraw, Michael Buble and the Eagles. The circus had seven performances.

June events brought in $2.5 million in gross ticket sales.

There were two events in July — Rascal Flatts and REO Speedwagon/Pat Benatar.

August has seen performances by Celtic Woman, the Dave Matthews Band and Rush.

Commissioner Dave Unruh said he's focused on the year-end bottom line.

"Every time we've had a conversation about this particular aspect of owning the arena, we've been told that events bottom out at the tail end of the summer and early part of the fall and expect not to be making any money or even losing money," Unruh said.

Arena general manager A.J. Boleski said the trend is industrywide.

"We'd normally expect the summer months to be the months where you're going to experience a loss," he said. "We do completely expect things to get busier in October."

Wichita Thunder hockey starts back up in October, which also will feature WWE "Monday Night Raw" and a concert by Carrie Underwood.
