  • Published Monday, August 16, 2010, at 12:05 a.m.

Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: An annual report compiled by the FBI called "Crime in the United States."

Why you'd want it: The report contains data about crimes nationwide, by state and by individual agencies. It also features information about arrests, clearance rates and law enforcement employee data.

Where you get the record: From the FBI's website, www.fbi.gov. Click on the "UCR Crime Statistics" link under the "Be Crime Smart" menu.

How much it will cost: The information is free.
