Wichita State fans might take particular notice when an El Dorado Broncos pitcher takes the mound during the National Baseball Congress World Series.
As Charlie Lowell, T.J. McGreevy and Brian Flynn took to the mound at their respective moments Saturday night, it presented a peek at into three Shocker pitchers.
Fans had to like what Lowell, McGreevy and Flynn showed in a 6-1 victory over the Gunnison (Colo.) Colts at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in the opening round of the NBC World Series.
El Dorado advances in the winners bracket and will play the St. Joseph (Mo.) Mustangs on Monday.
"Hopefully we'll have that in the future during our (WSU) season," McGreevy said. "It's cool to come back and play with some of my buddies."
The familiarity with one another might create a comfortable environment, but El Dorado manager Andy Schatzley says there are not three harder workers on the team than the WSU trio.
"The best part about all three of them is the way they work," Schatzley said. "They really do push each other and feed off each other."
Lowell gave the rest of the Broncos plenty to feed off of with his seven-inning outing, where he allowed a run, three hits and struck out nine.
"I was just hitting my spots really well," Lowell said. "I didn't really have my best stuff with me, but I was spotting my fastball really well. I just got ahead of hitters and that made everything a lot easier."
McGreevy, making his first appearance of the summer, sat down the Colts in order in the eighth inning and Flynn closed the game out in the ninth. The Colts only had four base runners during the game.
Competition, according to Schatzley, is what drives the three pitchers.
"None of them want anybody else to be better than them because then they'll hear about it," Schatzley said. "There's no shortage of confidence there."
El Dorado grabbed the lead in the third inning on Kirk Walker's single that drove in two runs. Walker finished the game reaching base in all four at-bats, including three hits, two runs scored and two drive in.
The Broncos tacked on another run in the sixth inning and Lowell exited the game after the seventh inning with a 3-1 lead.
Three more runs were scored in the eighth to solidify the Broncos' lead. Zach Noonan drove in two runs — one courtesy of a throwing error — with a double and the third run scored on a Matt Giller single.
Avoiding the loser's bracket — and the single elimination that comes with it — was a key talking point among players after the game.
"If you lose this first one, you have a huge mountain to climb," McGreevy said. "This was big to stay on the right side of the bracket."

St. Joseph (Mo.) 10, Greeley (Colo.) 2 — Wichita State's Johnny Coy had two of the Mustangs' 13 hits in its run-rule victory over Greeley.
St. Joseph which didn't clinch a spot in the tournament until Thursday, continued its recent torrid hitting pace. in their first NBC appearance.
"It was kind of nice to jump right into it," center fielder Greg Noble said. "We've been hot lately, so it was good to keep that momentum going."
