Wichita is one of the most affordable cities in America to buy a home, according to CNN and Money magazine.
The worry in Wichita, though, is that aviation instability could drive home prices down and buyers out of the local market.
The CNN/Money list ranks Wichita 14th in the top 25, with a median home price of $115,136 and a median family income of $64,889.
The magazine credits that standing to aviation.
"Aircraft manufacturing is an economic mainstay, with Learjet, Cessna and Hawker Beechcraft all based in town, while Boeing and Airbus maintain facilities," the CNNMoney website reads.
"Those industries offer well-paying jobs, which is reflected in Wichita's high median income."
But with thousands of aviation layoffs since 2008 and rising concern that Hawker Beechcraft could move some jobs elsewhere, it's not clear where the local market is heading.
Stan Longhofer, director of Wichita State University's Center for Real Estate, said local home prices have remained fairly flat.
"Slight declines, but modest," he said.
"In the current economic environment, there have certainly been income hits in Wichita, but we've fared relatively better in real estate than other places."
Despite historically low interest rates, local and national economic instability dominates conversation in the Wichita market, said Steve Wilbur, managing broker with United Country Theurer Auction and Realty in Wichita.
"You definitely hear concern in the market, the coffee-table conversations," he said.
