Veteran sportswriter and Kansas Golf Foundation Hall of Fame member Mal Elliott died early Friday in Wichita.

Elliott had been suffering from cancer. He was 80.

A native of Oklahoma, Elliott arrived in Wichita in 1974 as sports editor of the Wichita Eagle-Beacon. Among the beats he covered during more than 20 years at the paper were the Big Eight, Kansas State athletics, the Wichita Wings and golf.

He retired from the newspaper in 1994, but continued to work as a freelance writer for various publications, including South Central Golf Magazine, a publication he had written for since 1993.

He also wrote four books about golf, including "100 Years of Kansas Golf." He was inducted into the state golf hall of fame in 2008.

Funeral services are pending.
