GREAT BEND — A central Kansas man has died after being shot while trying to protect his sister-in-law during a confrontation over the weekend.

Wesley Medical Center confirmed that Steven Calderwood died Tuesday from gunshot wounds he suffered Saturday in rural Barton County.

Calderwood and his sister-in-law Sarah Ney were shot, allegedly by Ney's estranged husband, at Calderwood's home north of Great Bend. Witnesses told police that Calderwood was trying to shield Sarah Ney when he was shot.

Ney's husband is being held in the Barton County jail but charges have not been filed.

Sarah Ney was in fair condition at Wichita's Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis.
