  • Published Monday, July 12, 2010, at 12:04 a.m.

Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: Filings of substantial interest for elected and appointed officials.

Why you'd want them: To learn more about business interests that officials have and potential conflicts of interests that might occur.

Where you get the records: From the Kansas Secretary of State's Office, www.kssos.org. Click on the "Elections and Legislative" link, then on "Substantia lnterests" and then on "View SSI." You will need to create a free account with a user name and password to access the information.

How much it will cost: The information is free.
