In a move expected to excite a frustrated fan base, the Wichita Thunder has hired Kevin McClelland as its new coach, two sources close to the team confirmed today.
A news conference to introduce McClelland as coach has been tentatively scheduled for Monday at Intrust Bank Arena, a source said.
McClelland, a former Central Hockey League coach of the year, is a proven winner. He has guided teams to the CHL playoffs four consecutive seasons, winning coach of the year honors in 2007.
A physical forward, McClelland played on four Stanley Cup championship teams for the Edmonton Oilers dynasty in the 1980s.
