The eighth annual Yappy Days takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Pavilion II at the Kansas Coliseum. It's a day to celebrate dogs and the people who love them. Here's what you'll find there:
1) Contests galore. For example, watch the stupid pet tricks contest at 10:30 a.m. and then stick around for the dog owner and dog lookalike contest at 11 a.m. The ugliest dog contest is at 1 p.m. and the best-dressed dog contest is at 2 p.m.
2) Vendors. Dog owners can find everything they need for dog care, comfort and fun, including toys, dog pillows, dog reflective vests, treats, dog fences, leashes and training tools.
3) WichitaPaws booth. Visit the booth and meet Sparky, the new spokesdog for The Wichita Eagle's online pet site. You can also get information on how to win $50 in a new "beautiful dog" photo contest.
Admission to Yappy Days is $5 for adults and $2 for children 5 to 12. Children 4 and under get in free. A portion of proceeds benefit the Sedgwick County Emergency Management K-9 Unit.
A good deal
Via Christi is inviting families to attend its first-ever TransForum, a free health expo that will offer screenings and fun activities. It's from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Century II Expo Hall. Among the exhibits people can visit are a mock labor and delivery room and a real medical helicopter. There will be drawings for prizes throughout the day, including for a MacBook Air and Wii game systems. Get your blood pressure checked, watch cooking demonstrations and visit the teddy bear emergency department, which will provide treatment to kids' stuffed animals and dolls.
