WICHITA —"The Miracle of Father Kapaun," an eight-part series by Roy Wenzl on the life of Father Emil Kapaun, won first place in the National Headliner Awards.

The series, which ran in December 2009, was the winner in News Series for papers with a daily circulation up to 75,000.

The National Headliners Awards, in their 76th year, is one of the oldest and largest annual journalism contests. It is run by the Press Club of Atlantic City.

Father Kapaun, a native of Pilsen, died in a prisoner of war camp during the Korean War. He has been recommended for the Medal of Honor and the Vatican is investigating his case for sainthood.
