Greg Davis was more than the driver of a red SUV going the wrong way.
That's what Tristan Davis wants you to know.
"He has a 4-year-old daughter, he has three nieces and a nephew," she said of Greg Davis, her ex-husband. "His daughter was his life. He was a great person."
Greg Davis was the driver of the SUV that came out the wrong way of the Kansas Turnpike's Belle Plaine service area early Monday morning and crashed head-on into a minivan.
Three of the four family members in the van were killed. The fourth is in the hospital in serious condition. Greg Davis, 27, also was killed.
"I feel so bad for the other family," Tristan Davis said. "My heart goes out to them."
Earlier this week, Tristan Davis called The Eagle to talk about her ex-husband. She said she felt it was important that people know "he wasn't some awful person."
She said she was doing it for their daughter, 4-year-old Brooklynn, and for Greg Davis' current wife, whom he married in September.
Greg Davis' father declined to be interviewed when contacted by The Eagle.
Tristan Davis doesn't know why Greg Davis was on the turnpike at 4:30 a.m. Monday or why he came out of the service area northbound in the southbound lanes.
"The only thing I can think of is he was really confused... tired and confused," she said. "None of us can figure it out."
What she does know is that he was a terrific artist.
"He could draw anything," said Tristan Davis, 27. "His doodles were some of his most amazing work. Brooklynn loves to draw just like her daddy.
"They had their own language together. Only they understood what they were saying. He'd always say, 'Who loves you the most? She'd say, 'Daddy.' "
Now, Brooklynn asks her mother every day to type messages to her father on his Facebook page.
She and Greg Davis had remained in regular contact, in part because they share custody of Brooklynn. They saw each other last Saturday, two days before the accident.
She said Greg Davis worked in production at Spirit AeroSystems. He was to move to first shift from second shift next week so he could have Brooklynn at night while Tristan Davis goes to Kansas Air National Guard basic training this summer.
"He wanted the world for his daughter," Tristan Davis said.
She said Brooklynn knows about what happened to her father.
"She's seen the pictures," Tristan Davis said. "I don't want her just to have all this negative stuff to see."
