Mayor Carl Brewer's steering committee on Friday approved a streetscape plan that will help shape the new face of downtown.
The plan, by Professional Engineering Consultants and Skinner Design Studios of Wichita, will be used by master plan consultant Goody Clancy to determine the desired traffic flow and uses of downtown streets.
"Everything we've done to now is to create continuity downtown, not chaos," said Kurt Skinner, principal of Skinner Design Studios.
Steering committee members lent their input to the plan Friday, discussing a wide range of issues from bicycle traffic flow to solar lighting to business frontage design.
"We want to design... a place where you know there will be tons of people there," Skinner said.
The plan provides a variety of streetscape elements, ranging from parking to amenities, to be used in each of downtown's nine districts, from Old Town to Delano, WaterWalk and the Intrust Bank Arena neighborhood.
The streetscape plan goes to the Wichita City Council for a workshop discussion Tuesday.
Next up is the Wichita Downtown Development Corp. on Thursday and the Sedgwick County Commission on March 30.
Final City Council approval is expected on April 20.
