On the garden hotline

  • Published Saturday, March 20, 2010, at 12:04 a.m.

The Extension Master Gardener Hotline takes questions about gardening from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. weekdays at 316-660-1000 through October. Here is a question fielded this week.

Will the cold weekend weather kill any growth on plants?

Looking at plants from apricot trees to daffodils, we are about three weeks behind on plant development. (Usually apricots and daffodils are in full bloom the first week of March.) Thus temperatures dropping to the mid-20s will cause little to most likely no damage. Just hold off on planting until early next week, and plants such as cole crops, onions, potatoes, pansies, etc., can all go in the ground.
