Botanical name: Prunus mume "Peggy Clarke"
Location: Parking lot (south of main gate)
Description: Deciduous ornamental tree that produces delicate, spicily fragrant, deep-pink double blooms on bare branches in late winter/early spring. Grows 12 to 20 feet high.
Growing tips: Plant in full sun in well-drained, fertile soil. Resistant to most pests and diseases. Blooms on previous year's wood, so care should be taken when pruning. Low temperatures in late winter may damage the flowers.
History: Grown at Botanica since 1998.
Uses: Attractive to bees. For maximum enjoyment and effect, plant along a frequently used walkway or near a patio or deck.
