Regan Wheeler, the 13-year-old girl hospitalized after driving a golf cart into a barbed wire fence on Wednesday, died this morning, according to hospital and police officials.
Regan attended Allison Traditional Magnet Middle School, according to the Wichita school district. She was the daughter of Heights High School athletic coordinator Rick Wheeler.
"It's just one of those sad, tragic accidents," Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy said.
Regan and two friends, all of Wichita, were together at a private subdivision at Fox Lake in Butler County on Wednesday evening.
Regan lost control of the golf cart while making a turn on a slope above a ravine, Murphy said. She ran into a barbed-wire fence.
The two other teens tried, unsuccessfully, to free her.
Regan remained entangled for almost a half hour before a Fox Lake resident freed her, police said.
Emergency responders said she was unresponsive when they arrived, and she was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center.
