K-State goes deep, wears out Green

OKLAHOMA CITY — They came at North Texas in waves. Non-stop, pounding, and in this case, highly motivated.

Kansas State's frontcourt overwhelmed the Mean Green on Thursday, helping lead the way to an 82-62 victory during the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

"They've got multiple guys just coming at you, one after another," said 6-foot-7 North Texas forward Eric Tramiel. "After awhile it's just another big body. They just wore us down physically."

The Wildcats used an attack-by-committee approach to stop North Texas' pair of All-Sun Belt forwards in Tramiel, who averaged 13 points and five rebounds this season, and 6-8, 240-pound George Odufuwa, who averages 11.7 points and 10.7 rebounds.

"You really can't prepare for it," Tramiel said. "You just go as hard as you can for as long as you can... but it's still not going to be enough."

Tramiel and Odufuwa were able to hold their own early against K-State, but once coach Frank Martin went to his bench, both players ended up in foul trouble and the game quickly turned into a rout.

"Once we got into our rotation I think that was when we started to wear them down," said K-State forward Dominique Sutton, who finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. "You could see them start to get more and more tired and then they were just done."

Sutton (6-5), Curtis Kelly (6-8), Luis Colon (6-10), Jordan Henriquez-Roberts (7-0) and Wally Judge (6-9) all played at least 15 minutes against North Texas as Kansas State registered a season-high 10 blocks.

Kelly finished with 15 points and four blocks. Henriquez-Roberts and Judge each grabbed six rebounds. Henriquez-Roberts added two blocks, as did Colon.

"We had a little foul trouble ourselves early so that forced us to rotate," Kelly said. "And once we did that it seemed like our bigs started to do a better job."

Jamar Samuels, who averages 11.9 points and 5.2 rebounds, played a season-low seven minutes after picking up two fouls early in each half.

"We all understand that we'll turn to whoever is getting us going that particular night," Sutton said. "Not everybody is going to always have a good night. When we need to go to our bench we know that somebody will step up and help us win."
