Sharon Cranford thinks the 29 young African-American men in this year's Beautillion, which will culminate Saturday in an awards presentation at Century II, are "agents for change."

Cranford, who belongs to the Wichita Chapter of Links Inc., a nonprofit organization sponsoring Beautillion, is also the presentation chair for the event.

The participants have been involved in the educational, scholarship and leadership program for the past six months.

"This program is to help young men grow and develop," said Alisia Payne, program chair.

The beaux were selected from Wichita high school senior classes. They met grade and good-citizen requirements and have the desire to further their education.

"We always make sure that 100 percent of our beaux are accepted into college by the end of the program," Cranford said.

Upon being accepted into the program, each beau was paired with a mentor. Over the past six months, the beaux participated in workshops, leadership classes and college fundraising activities.

On Wednesday night, they returned from a tour of colleges throughout Kansas, Texas and Arkansas.

The theme for Saturday evening is Creative Excellence Unlimited, which Cranford said means the beaux must use their creativity to be excellent in whatever endeavor they choose, never limiting themselves.

The night will include a presentation of each beau, his mentor and his family, a talent show by selected beaux, singing, dancing and awards, which will include financial bonuses and scholarships.

Cranford and Payne think the program, which is in its 35th year, encourages young black men who are doing the right thing to continue their education and become professionals.

"We hear so much bad news about the African-American community," Cranford said. "I urge the community to come hear and see for themselves all the good news."
