A 14-year-old Wichita girl was hospitalized Wednesday after driving a golf cart off an embankment near Fox Lake and spending almost a half-hour entangled in barbed wire, according to the Butler County Sheriff's Office.

Two other teenage girls who were passengers in the golf cart had desperately tried to free the driver with no success, authorities said.

Fox Lake is a private lake-side subdivision east of Cassoday in Butler County.

An adult resident at Fox Lake was called and was able to cut her out of the fence, authorities said.

He kept the golf cart — teetering above the creek — stable and from falling in by using an extension cord tied to his pickup.

Emergency responders said the driver was unresponsive and in critical condition when they arrived. She was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center.

Sheriff Craig Murphy said he believes the three Wichita girls were at the private lake-side subdivision to visit friends during spring break.
