Comic not desperate for fame Comedian, actor and director Bobcat Goldthwait likes working behind the scenes.

Bobcat Goldthwait was simply known as a comic a generation ago. Back then, the up-and-coming humorist was making a name for himself on "Late Night With David Letterman" and feuding with the late Sam Kinison.

During the late '80s and early '90s, though, Goldthwait crossed over to film, appearing in such movies as "Scrooged," "Hot to Trot" and the "Police Academy" series.

Over the past decade, Goldthwait, 47, decided to go behind the camera. He directed "The Man Show," which introduced the masses to Jimmy Kimmel. And he is currently directing episodes of Comedy Central's "Important Things With Demetri Martin."

Goldthwait, who will perform Tuesday and Wednesday at the Loony Bin, is back on the stand-up trail.

"It's funny doing it now because I'm not sure people know that I did stand-up before," he said in a phone interview from his Los Angeles home. "Other people think I'm dead. I don't know if that hurts tickets sales."

Not much has changed about Goldthwait's stand-up routine. He riffs on current events and his personal life. "The thing about doing material that's close to you makes it unique," Goldthwait said. "Not that I care if someone steals from me. I'm not the comedy police. I just like to have fun with this."

Expect Goldthwait to crack wise about pop culture.

"I can't help but talk about Michael Jackson," he said. "I think he represents the sickness infecting America. His history was rewritten because he died and he was a good singer and dancer. Now they're leaving out the child abuse allegations."

Goldthwait also balks at the extensive media coverage of Tiger Woods' personal life.

"I think it's insane that he had to hold a press conference about something that is his business," he said. "I have no problem with Tiger Woods. Him sleeping with women who were not his wife didn't affect me."

Goldthwait remains as uncompromising as he was during his salad days. He isn't desperate for more fame, he says.

"I'm happy to direct. I'm not dying to do anything to get back on television. I'm offered reality stuff like 'Celebrity Fit Club' all the time and I turn it down. I'm fine doing what I'm doing."

He says he enjoys working behind the scenes with comics.

"I really like helping them get their ideas across," Goldthwait said. "I want them to feel that they're working in a safe, creative environment. I have fun directing. When I need something extra, I go out and do stand-up. It works for me."
