HANNIBAL, Mo. | Municipal charges have been filed against a Hannibal man accused of stomping a dog to death.

The dog, a small Pomeranian mix, had severe head trauma.

The city on Tuesday charged 31-year-old Joseph Bentley with killing an animal, cruelty and animal abuse, and other municipal violations, all misdemeanors.

Hannibal Police Capt. James Hark said Bentley "crushed the life out of" the dog, throwing it to the pavement and stomping on its neck until it died.

The dog belonged to Bentley's girlfriend. Her mother took it to the police station.

Bentley told police the dog had growled at him when he reached into its cage.
