For the first time since 2001, and only the third time in the program's history, the Wichita State women's basketball team is in the post-season.
Second-year head coach Jody Adams accepted a bid to the Women's Basketball Invitational, a postseason tournament debuting this season.
Wichita State (17-14), seeded fourth in the West region, will host Akron (18-13) on Thursday night at Koch Arena at 7:05 p.m.
"I think it's a huge step," Adams said. "In teaching and where our expectations are of our student-athletes. They will have that sense of understanding of what we expect to do. We don't want to settle for anything less."
Both programs are coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history. The Zips set new records in overall wins and league wins this season, while the Shockers set records in most home wins in a season and defeated a team three times in a season for the first time.
Adams hopes the experience of playing in the postseason will be the jumping off point for a team that will return all but one significant player in its rotation next season.
"I think it's a great teaching tool," Adams said. "To teach them what type of investment you have to make as a player at this level. Wichita State makes an investment in all of us. So we're teaching them how to make an investment back into this university. If you don't ever invest that talent, than you will become average and stay average."
