Fort Hays State falls in regional semifinal

The Fort Hays State men's basketball team saw its season come to and on Sunday with a 80-73 loss to Central Missouri in the semifinals of the South Central Regional in the NCAA Division II Tournament at Wichita Falls, Texas.

Central Missouri, the MIAA regular-season champion, hit 10 of 17 three-point attempts in the first half and led 46-34 at halftime. Central's first 18 points came on threes.

The Mules pushed their lead to as much as 17 in the second half before the Tigers answered back to get within five following a Willie Hassell jumper with 5:02 to play.

It was the third meeting between the two teams this season. Fort Hays won the first game and the Mules won the last two.

Alex Moosmann led Central Missouri with 22 points. MIAA player of the year Sanijay Watts added 21 points and nine rebounds. Ryan Harris finished with 17, including five threes.

Fort Hays State (23-7) was led by Hassell's 17 points — 14 in the second half — and got 12 points each from Dominique Jones, Tim Peintner and Dijon Smith.

Corbin Kuntzsch led the Tigers with 10 rebounds.

The Mules take on host Midwestern State today in the regional final.

Hornets play today — The Emporia State women's team will take on Northeastern State today in the South Central Regional final of the NCAA Division II Tournament at Canyon, Texas.

The Hornets are trying to return to return to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2006, and are led by MIAA player of the year Cassondra Boston, who had 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the regional semifinal win over West Texas A&M.
