The Wichita Thunder enjoyed a couple unexpected leads on Sunday night, but the die-hard fans, those who have been paying attention all season, must have understood the situation.

It was just a tease.

Adding one more disappointment to the already disastrous season, the Thunder completed the home portion of its schedule with a 5-2 loss to Missouri at Intrust Bank Arena.

The expansion Mavericks, based out of Independence, clinched a spot in the Central Hockey League playoffs while the Thunder, once a proud franchise, will wrap up the season with a couple meaningless road games this week.

With its fifth straight loss at Intrust Bank Arena, the Thunder finishes with the worst home record (3-26-3) in the 18-year history of the franchise.

The team's last three losses at IBA fall under the embarrassing category: 8-1 to Colorado, 6-0 to Amarillo and 5-2 to Missouri.

On Sunday, billed as fan appreciation night, the Thunder took a 1-0 lead on Paul Kelly's backhander in the first and went up 2-1 in the second on Tomas Klempa's power-play goal.

Less than 2 1/2 minutes later, Missouri had the lead for good, thanks to a pair of goals from Braden Walls.

"We played a good first period and then the first part of the second period was OK," interim coach Jason Duda said. "Then a couple breakdowns off the draw and we were down.

"They gave us a good battle. They were playing for their playoff lives, and they took advantage of their opportunities."

Notes _ Missouri won all 10 meetings with the Thunder this season.... The 11th annual Thunder vs. Plunder wheelchair hockey game is 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Wichita State Heskett Center. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children and can be purchased at the gate. A jersey auction will follow the game.
