Painful Thunder home schedule closes

  • The Wichita Eagle
  • Published Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 12:05 a.m.

Everywhere you looked on Wednesday night, there were signs of how awful things have become for the Wichita Thunder.

Instead of reporters, the press room at Intrust Bank Arena was filled with injured hockey players not in uniform.

As the Colorado Eagles were pummeling the Thunder, general manager Joel Lomurno stood in the front row of his team's suite, looking depressed.

After Colorado's five-goal second period doomed the Thunder to yet another loss, disinterested fans headed for the exits.

And when the 8-1 shellacking was complete, an irritated Jason Duda, the team's interim coach, described the game as embarrassing before declining to offer more details.

The only positive? The team moved one game closer to the conclusion of the worst season in the 18-year history of the franchise.

The Thunder plays host to Missouri tonight to complete its home schedule.

A couple days before the lopsided loss to Colorado, Duda had already described the season as one to forget.

And Lomurno admitted that he is glad the end is near.

"I think everyone is happy its almost over so we can start fixing things for next season," he said. "I can honestly say that this will be the first time I've ever been happy the season is over."

Note — Lomurno said he preferred to wait until the season is over to discuss the team's coaching situation, but he did say Duda has done an admirable job. "He has made great moves to improve this team on paper and certainly made some good moves for players that we want to have back next year that would be a good base to build around," Lomurno said. "On the flip side, now that season is winding down, a few solid coaching candidates have become available, and we will evaluate this more in the next couple weeks."
