Austin Sharp's 1967 Mustang
A classic Mustang with ghost flames and mag wheels _ it doesn't get much better than that for a young fella like you. Where did you find this car?
Some guy in El Dorado had it for sale; my grandpa left me his '72 LeMans, so I decided to sell it and get this. I have had it since I was a freshman (at Newton High School) and I drove it to school every day for a couple of years. I haven't driven it much so far my junior year because of the winter weather.
Was it in this kind of shape when you got it?
The body and paint were done... it was shaved, no antenna, no emblems, no gas tank cap. I did the interior and the rear end, all the sound deadener, the carpet, the seats, the dash and door panels and the window regulators. It's painted a bright metallic blue, with silver flames.
You mentioned it had originally been a 289 V-8 with a three-speed manual transmission. What's in it now?
It's got a 302 that was brand-new, made for a boat, so it is stronger, with forged parts. It's got a 100-horsepower shot of nitrous on it, with a T-5 4-speed transmission and a 9-inch Ford rear end with 3:73 gears in it. It has Cragar SS wheels and I had to put traction bars on it because of the wheel hop.
Any additional equipment in the works?
I'm going to put a locker (rear end) in it, slicks and roll control (for drag racing at Kansas International Dragway) this season. It's a hot rod now.
