Intelligent, thinking people easily understand the difference between a president who inherited a balanced budget and nearly $300 billion in surplus funds in 2001 and a president who inherited a full-blown disaster in 2009.

Stimulus money is paying for some Wichita-area road construction projects to make jobs. Our state government has canceled some roadwork to support the state budget. Where are the additional jobs in this equation?

* * *

Why does the government waste money sending out a letter from the Census Bureau telling us that in a week we'll be getting another letter from the Census Bureau? That's redundant and a waste of the taxpayers' money.

* * *

Bill Roy's column "Either way, health insurance companies win" (March 6 Opinion) stated that the average American family spends $13,000 annually on health insurance. This is crazy. Take money out of my paycheck each week and pass a public option.

President Obama said about health reform: "If not now, when?" Simple: when you get it right.

Fred Phelps and his nutty followers are within their constitutional rights to express their disgusting opinions in offensive ways. The First Amendment protects only such offensive expressions. Inoffensive expressions require no protections.

* * *

Last I heard, the phrase "do the deed" was slang for having sex. Kind of a tasteless name for any program, let alone one about random acts of kindness, don't you think?

* * *

Doing good deeds is a wonderful thing, but it's even better when your good deeds are a secret. I was raised to help others, but you just do it with no fanfare.

Smokers must be Democrats. They spend their time whining and crying about not being able to infect those who don't smoke. No one put a gun to their head and told them they had to start smoking.

* * *

If anti-smoker laws don't hurt business, why is the state giving casinos an exemption?

It's OK if you want to get up and dance at the concerts at the Intrust Bank Arena, but please be respectful to those you are blocking. I missed half of the Elton John/Billy Joel concert because of the woman in front of me.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have made a decision: Winter is over. No more snow, ice and frigid cold. You're welcome.
