A shooting that left one teen in the hospital and another under arrest appears to be accidental, police said Wednesday.
The two were among a group of four teens playing a card game at an apartment in the 1500 block of West Pawnee shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday when one of them displayed a handgun, pointed it at a 16-year-old boy and pulled the trigger, Wichita police Capt. Brent Allred said.
The small-caliber handgun went off and the bullet struck the victim in the cheek, Allred said.
"I don't think he thought the gun was loaded," Allred said of the 17-year-old suspect.
Others in the group loaded the victim into a car and took him to the Walmart at Pawnee and Broadway, where they dropped him off. Police were called, and the victim was taken to Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus for treatment.
"Any time anybody gets shot, it's serious," Allred said, but the victim's wounds are not life-threatening.
We're "very lucky that no one died in this situation," Allred said. "Even though it's an accident, there's still going to be charges with this because of the reckless nature of the incident."
The 17-year-old turned himself in at the Patrol South Bureau a short time after the shooting.
He was booked into the juvenile detention center on suspicion of aggravated battery, Allred said. More charges could be filed, Allred said, but that will be up to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.
"You hate to see this stuff occur," Allred said. "There's no reason for this kid to have a handgun in the first place."
