In what surely ranks as one of the most humiliating 20 minutes in Wichita Thunder history, the Colorado Eagles continued to fire shot after shot and score goal after goal, but the unsightly second period wasn't the stunning part of the evening.
The shocker was the crowd's reaction — or lack thereof — during the 8-1 loss in Intrust Bank Arena.
Even during Colorado's five-goal, 23-shot second period, there were few boos, few catcalls, few jeers.
Back when the Thunder was successful, the die-hards voiced their displeasure at the home team with regular ferocity.
And so it became clear on Wednesday: Thunder fans, who continue to come out in large numbers, who were voted Most Annoying in a recent league-wide poll, have finally become numb to all the poor play.
No one can blame them.
The Thunder is 8-46-5, lost 10 of 11 at Intrust Bank Arena and has lost nine in a row and 16 of 17. Wednesday's loss, during which the Thunder was outshot 50-22, was the worst yet.
"Embarrassing — that's all I have to say," interim coach Jason Duda said before he entered the team's dressing room.
Wichita actually kept the game close early, tying it at 1 on Joel Hanson's power-play goal in the first period, but Colorado restored order less than two minutes later to carry a 2-1 lead into the ugly second period.
The onslaught started innocently enough, with a Riley Nelson goal at 7:28 of the second. Jay Birnie scored 11 seconds later. Less than two minutes after that, Brett Lutes joined the stats-padding party with another goal.
Give Colorado credit: Armed with an impressive collection of talent, the Eagles (38-14-7) could have sleep-walked to victory, but they came at the Thunder hard — especially during the second period.
"They're a good puck-possession team, and they played on our end the whole period," said Hanson, who stretched his scoring streak to six games. "We couldn't do anything to stop the momentum. They just rolled with it, and we just stood there and watched."
Notes — The 50 shots allowed by the Thunder tied a season high. Rapid City also had 50 last week.... Colorado won the season series 8-0.
