Former heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison said Friday that his arrest the night before on marijuana charges caught him off guard.
"This is one of those situations where it's not what it seems," he said.
Morrison, 41, was arrested at 6:46 p.m. Thursday outside Snap Fitness, 125 N. Market, on suspicion of marijuana possession, according to Wichita police records.
Police were called to the fitness club to check out a report of a suspicious person, Capt. Troy Livingston said.
Morrison said he spent about two hours in the Sedgwick County Jail after police found a pipe in his car that they said contained marijuana residue.
He said he was released on $4,000 bond and ordered to appear in court on March 6.
Morrison said he often lifts weights at Snap Fitness, and he said he usually sits in his car before going inside, reading his Bible and meditating.
"I was just sitting there doing my normal routine, and I guess someone thought I looked suspicious and called the cops," he said.
Morrison said he agreed to let police search his car, which contained boxes and other items that had been accumulated during a recent move from Tennessee.
He said the pipe was in a box filled with boxing equipment that was on the floorboard.
"They found an old pipe that had some residue on it or something," he said.
"Someone in my position, I guess, has to be more careful. I wasn't aware of what I had in that box. I wasn't aware of anything illegal."
Morrison said he moved to Wichita nine months ago to work with the Tommy Morrison Children's Foundation, which he is trying to turn into a camp for terminally ill children.
Morrison is a native of Oklahoma who defeated George Foreman to win the World Boxing Organization's heavyweight title in 1993. He lost the title later that year.
Morrison, who starred in the movie "Rocky V" in 1990, said he is next scheduled to fight in New Mexico in June.Contributing: Stan Finger of The Eagle Reach Hurst Laviana at 316-268-6499 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
