Second chance to see oil exhibit Bad weather kept some from the opening reception in January for the Kansas Academy of Oil Painters.

The oil paintings on view through the end of the month at CityArts represent a range of skills from beginner to advanced, but it's hard not to find something to like in all of them.

Created by members of the Kansas Academy of Oil Painters, the 74 paintings cover a wide variety of subjects, from still lifes to landscapes, animals to florals, and more.

Among the most admired paintings are those depicting Kansas scenes, said Tabitha Bean, gallery coordinator for City Arts.

"Kansas-themed paintings always do very well and have a positive response from viewers," she said. "When people buy paintings, they tend to buy those with Kansas subjects."

One example of that is a painting of a lone buffalo called "Last One Standing," by Mary Binford Miller, said Angela Cato, CityArts marketing director.

"This work has such a strong attention to detail and a lifelike quality," she said. "People have really enjoyed it."

Another work that has drawn attention is Chuck Roach's "Rose of Sharon," an extreme close-up of a yellow and red rose that almost seems to be lit from within.

All but two of the 74 works in the show are for sale.

The 29 artists represented in the show are from Wichita and the surrounding area, said Bean. Another show representing the entire organization is scheduled for July at Century II.

The show at CityArts will be included in the gallery's Final Friday event on Feb. 26.

"The opening reception was in January," Cato said, "but because of the terrible weather very few people were able to get out to see the show. These works of art are so intriguing and captivating; people will have a second chance with this exhibit."
