Northern Iowa wins MVC title

Northern Iowa clinched the first outright Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championship in school history by defeating Creighton 70-52 on Tuesday night in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Ali Farokhmanesh hit five three-pointers and scored 17 points for the Panthers (23-3, 14-2 MVC), who tied Creighton for the title last season. Johnny Moran also scored 17 points, and Kwadzo Ahelegbe had five rebounds and four assists.

Antoine Young led the Bluejays (13-14, 8-8) with 12 points. Justin Carter and Kenny Lawson Jr. had 11 each.

The Panthers raised their home record to 12-0 even without 7-foot center Jordan Eglseder, who was suspended for three games after his arrest for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Drake 79, Southern Illinois 72 — Ryan Wedel of Minneapolis, Kan., scored 17 points as Drake surged late to beat Southern Illinois.

Seth VanDeest added 14 points, Josh Young 13 and Adam Templeton 11 for the Bulldogs (12-16, 7-9 Missouri Valley), who snapped a four-game losing streak by rallying from a one-point deficit in t he final 5 minutes.

Gene Teague's double-double of a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds led the Salukis (14-12, 6-10). Tony Freeman added 18 points, 14 in the first half, and Justin Bocot scored 10.

After Craig Stanley made two free throws to put Drake ahead 59-54 with 6:47 left, Teague finished a 6-0 Southern Illinois run with two free throws to put his team up 60-59 with 4:53 to go.

Indiana State 75, Bradley 69, OT — Aaron Carter hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 40 seconds left in overtime, then added a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining to send Indiana State to a victory over Bradley.

Carter, who finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, also hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds left in regulation to put the Sycamores (6-11, 8-8 Missouri Valley) on top 61-59, only to see Bradley's Sam Maniscalco score on a layup with five seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

No. 11 Michigan State 72, Indiana 58 — Draymond Green scored 14 points and Kalin Lucas added 13 to lead Michigan State.

It was the second straight win for the Spartans (21-6, 11-3), who took over sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. No. 9 Ohio State trails Michigan State by one-half game and hosts No. 4 Purdue on Wednesday.

Verdell Jones had 20 points and Christian Watford added 14 for the Hoosiers (9-16, 3-10), who lost their seventh straight. Indiana coach Tom Crean has lost all three head-to-head matchups with Tom Izzo, who had Crean on his Michigan State staff for four seasons.

No. 22 Baylor 88, Texas Tech 70 — LaceDarius Dunn scored 30 points and Ekpe Udoh had 13 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocks for Baylor which reached 20 wins for the third consecutive season.

Dunn scored 10 points in the final 5 1/2 minutes of the first half, after being held scoreless until then, to put the Bears (20-5, 7-4 Big 12) ahead to stay.

It is only the sixth 20-win season for Baylor, which has won five of its last six games.

David Tairu had 16 points for Texas Tech (16-9, 4-7).

Tweety Carter had 12 points and 11 assists for Baylor, which shot 54 percent from the field (33 of 61).

Udoh needed a block for his second triple-double of the season. He finished with his 12th double-double of the season and extended his season school record block total to 109.

Virginia Tech 87, No. 23 Wake Forest 83 — Malcolm Delaney scored 10 of his 31 points in the decisive final seven minutes for Virginia Tech.

The Hokies (21-4, 8-3) remained unbeaten in 14 home games this season, moved into second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference and got the kind of victory they sorely need down the stretch to help offset one of the nation's weakest nonconference schedules.

Wake Forest (18-6, 8-4), which moved into the Top 25 for the first time this week, led most of the game until a 15-4 run by the Hokies pulled them even with 8:30 to play.

Then Delaney got hot and the Hokies held on for their fifth consecutive victory.

Al-Farouq Aminu led Wake Forest with 25 points, but scored only four on limited touches in the second half.

Dorenzo Hudson added 21 points and J.T. Thompson had 16 for Virginia Tech.
