Good minutes _ For the first time in a long time, it felt as if Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall played freshman guard Demetric Williams because he wanted to, not because he had to rest starter Clevin Hannah. Williams scored five points in seven first-half minutes and helped WSU extend its lead. He came in with WSU down 11-9. His lay-up gave the Shockers a 14-13 lead. His three-pointer made it 17-13. "It started off with an easy bucket," Williams said. "I made a good cut, and Gabe (Blair) found me. Get an easy bucket first and everything else will come." Williams scored a season-high 12 points in Tuesday's loss at Evansville, giving him two solid outings in a row. "He's found his spots where he knows he can come in and contribute, and he's taking advantage of it," Hannah said. Bench contributions didn't end with Williams. Blair scored six points and grabbed six rebounds, four offensive. Garrett Stutz added seven points. David Kyles grabbed four rebounds.
Watch the shooter _ Give Missouri State's Adam Leonard the smallest opening and he will fire away. Often, his threes go in. The junior makes 39 percent of his three-pointers. WSU worked hard to take away those openings. Early , the Shockers switched when Leonard tried to use a screen, something they don't normally do. Later in the game, Toure Murry shadowed him. Both approaches worked. Leonard, averaging 12.5 points, scored five. In two games against the Shockers, he is 3 for 12 from three-point range with eight turnovers. "When he comes off screens, he can get it up, so my main thing was to fight over screens and be there on the catch," Murry said. "For the most part, I made him work."
Worth noting _ WSU coach Gregg Marshall dedicated the game to neighborhood friend Dwayne McGregor, who is ill, . . Roland Banks, an athletic department employee since 1974, was honored at halftime. "Mr. B", as he is known, retired in the fall. He supervised equipment beginning in 1976 . . . Four recruits visited _ Baltimore Lake Clifton High guard Daishon Knight, St. James Academy sophomore forward Clint McCullough, Butler Community College freshman guard Anthony Cousin and Northern Oklahoma College-Enid sophomore guard Ben Smith. Jim McCullough, Clint's father, played at WSU from 1973-76. . . .WSU won its third straight game over Missouri State and its third straight at Koch Arena. The Shockers swept the season series for the first time since the 2005-06 season.
