Thursday's opening of the Sports, Boat and Travel Show at the Kansas Coliseum in Park City will bring many familiar sights.

There could also be some pretty incredible smells.

Mike Faverman and Pat Mac will be doing their "Ultimate Camp Cooking" demonstrations several times through the show run that ends next Sunday.

"We believe when you're out camping you should be living like a king," Faverman said. "There's no reason for just hamburgers and hot dogs. It only takes a few ingredients to create some really great food."

Mac is from Idaho and Faverman from Hollywood. Both are professional stand-up comedians. They met when Faverman was performing at Mac's comedy shop in Boise.

After comparing cooking notes, they decided to try combine comedy with good cooking.

Faverman said they'll be demonstrating four recipes at each performance, including a marinated pork tenderloin, barbecue teriyaki shrimp scampi and an apple pie baked in a Dutch oven. The cooking will be done with simple camping equipment.

Faverman promised a few laughs will be dished up with samples of the cooking.

Several fishing seminars are also scheduled for the sports show. Wichitan Neal Hall will be giving fly fishing demonstrations at a large water tank. After a little how-to on fly casting, Hall said the seminars will focus on what flies look like underwater.

"It's a good opportunity to show how different rods and fly lines can get a fly to do about anything you could want a fly to do," Hall said. "I'll mostly be talking about flies you'd use to catch bass, sunfish and other Kansas fish."

Ross Whitacre, show manager, said this year's event is offering the public exotic entertainment, too. A large saltwater aquarium will hold several sharks.

Expert Phillip Peters will give presentations about the lives of sharks and take a look at dangers they pose to humans. He'll also show information on the life and myths surrounding great white sharks.

David Nieves will again bring his reptile show to this year's show.

Whitacre said the show will contain the usual long rows of booths promoting a wide variety of outdoors destinations and equipment.

The Wichita Eagle will display the 15 adult and five youth finalists of the Great Outdoors Photo Contest. The public can help select the winners at the show. Voting will begin Wednesday at Kansas.com. Voting will end at about noon on Saturday.
