Coventry Health Care, which acquired Preferred Health Systems earlier this month, today reported earnings of $109.1 million for the fourth quarter of 2009 and $315.3 million for the year.

For the fourth quarter, the company said, revenues increased 15.2 percent from a year earlier. Revenue from continuing operations for all of 2009 was up 18.5 percent over 2008.

"I am pleased with the progress that the company has made during 2009 including a strong finish to the year in the fourth quarter," said Coventry chairman and CEO Allen Wise. "Although we continue to operate in a challenging economic environment, as we enter 2010 we remain confident that our focus on Coventry's seven core businesses will best position us for the future."
