Slushy melt-off from Monday's snow could refreeze overnight and create hazardous conditions for this morning's commute, particularly on side streets. Wichita city street crews will be working round the clock with 60 plows, pushing snow back onto the curbs and applying salt and sand to slick areas, said Tony DeCicco, maintenance engineer for the city.
Since the storm hit Sunday, the city has had more than 140 employees working 12-hour shifts.
"Our biggest concern is the amount of water on the streets," DeCicco said. "As the temperatures get cold, we will be concerned about that refreezing and getting slick spots."
Street crews began in earnest Sunday night, clearing the streets of this latest storm, which peaked about 2 a.m. Monday.
By Monday afternoon, all of Wichita major streets had been cleared, DeCicco said.
Neighborhood residential streets, however, were slushy late Monday.
"Anything that has slush on it could easily slick over or freeze up, so people should be careful on the side streets," DeCicco said.
