MULVANE — Two girls ages 3 and 4 died after being trapped in a house fire in Mulvane this afternoon, the city's fire chief said.

Chief David Williams said the parents in the house in the 400 block of East Bridge were taking a nap when they were awakened by smoke after 12:30 p.m.

"The smoke was so thick they couldn't get to the back of the house to check on the children, so they went to a neighbor's house to call 911," Williams said.

The Mulvane Fire Department had been battling smoke and flames all afternoon before finding the children.

"The ceiling had collapsed on them, which is why we couldn't find them for so long," Williams said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
