WICHITA — If Sedgwick County commissioners and the city come through with $170,000, the Child Advocacy Center could remain open for one more year.
The center serves about 2,500 children a year who are sexually and physically abused, runaways or victims of Internet crime.
The center has faced funding woes. A majority of commissioners in January voted against a staff recommendation to give the center $835,000 to pay for expanded operations and relocation. Commissioner Gwen Welshimer proposed that the county give $334,000 as long as the city provide $334,000 and the state $167,000.
On Wednesday, commissioners will vote on a new proposal: Giving $120,000 to fund the center's operating costs for 2010.
The city is considering chipping in $50,000, according to the county.
